St Mary’s Church LED Lighting Usk, Monmouthshire

Brief

St Mary’s Church LED Lighting Usk, Monmouthshire Brief:

To replace the existing sodium floodlights with a modern LED system to improve the light levels while minimising the visual impact of the light fixtures. We implemented an all-LED Lighting system complete with lighting control to provide full dimming and scene setting capabilities, along with a tablet interface enabling the creation of custom scenes for specific events.

Specification

St Mary’s church was poorly lit with large ugly high wattage lamps that were installed without any calculation or design process, as a consequence the church appeared gloomy, uninviting and caused some health and safety issues.

With our advice and guidance, the decision was made to upgrade the lights to modern low-wattage LED fittings that would illuminate the church without any negative impact on the historic significance of the building; the team at St Mary’s really wanted a lighting system that not only provided good general light but enhanced the architectural splendour of the Church.

St. Mary’s had numerous discussions with a number of lighting consultants over many months, and we were delighted when they asked us to prepare a specification for a new lighting system.

We spent a considerable amount of time measuring the church for accuracy, establishing what the team at St Mary’s wanted and how we could achieve this for them.

Light level calculations were made to ensure the proposed light fittings achieved the required lumen levels. These calculations together with the design drawings and data sheets formed part of the faculty application and helped secure faculty approval.

Result

The transition to LED Church Lighting was anticipated to span two weeks and was scheduled for early September 2024. The implementation commenced as planned and was completed ahead of schedule. Adhering to our established protocols, the church and its community were treated with utmost respect, resulting in minimal disruption and minimal mess.

As discussed with the client, the aim was to illuminate the interior of the church and rediscover its true character without any negative impact on its historical significance. This would show the historic, beautiful features of the church hidden for so long due to the poor lighting. The new LED Church Lighting will also have a considerable impact on the running costs and overheads in the future.

We were delighted by the positive response to our work, making all the effort and attention to detail worthwhile.

We would like to thank St Mary’s for their heartfelt testimonial and for allowing us to work in their beautiful Church and give it a new lease of life.

Testimonial

“Viewing the church for the first time with the new lighting was astonishing and emotional. AJ Electrics had illuminated the church not just as we desired but beyond that. The lighting had an immense impact on the look of the church, however subtle enough not to impact its historical significance. It has been a great success. We could never have achieved this without the input, knowledge, and experience AJ Electrics brought to this project.

We are all truly grateful to Dave, Stuart, and Martin for the success of this project and recommend AJ Electrics unreservedly as a truly professional company.”
