Specification

In 2012, we installed a state-of-the-art hybrid lighting system at St George’s Church. While innovative for its time, by 2026 the system presented several operational and financial limitations:

Inflexible Control: The general lighting relied on ceramic metal halide fixtures which could not be dimmed, restricting atmospheric adjustments to the tungsten and architectural accent zones only.

Technology Obsolescence: Sourcing replacement parts for outdated ceramic metal halide and tungsten lamps became increasingly difficult, costly, and unsustainable.

High Maintenance Costs: Short lamp lifespans created a continuous, highly disruptive replacement cycle in hard-to-reach spaces.

Rigid Control Constraints: The physical control panels lacked the fluid flexibility required to support modern, multi-purpose community gatherings and live artistic events.

Result

The 2026 upgrade completely modernised the sacred space by replacing the legacy, obsolete fixtures with advanced, high-efficiency LED units. The structural integrity and architectural aesthetic of the historic church were fully preserved while transforming how the venue manages its illumination:

System-Wide Dimming: New LED units were seamlessly integrated into the core lighting control infrastructure, enabling smooth 0–100% dimming capabilities across the entire church layout.

Optimised Optics: Superior lumen output and precision beam control delivered brighter, more uniform illumination, allowing the total number of light fittings to be reduced.

Atmospheric Accents: The existing LED colour-changing systems were preserved to continue highlighting the church’s defining pillars and historic architectural arches.

Smart Tablet Control Interface: A modern, intuitive tablet interface was introduced to act as a fully mobile virtual lighting desk. Church staff can now effortlessly create custom lighting scenes for one-off parish events or actively mix dynamic lighting live during musical concerts.
